Genet McIntosh Hopewell
Genet M. Hopewell is a founding partner in the law firm of Johnson Hopewell Coleman, LLC. Her legal career began with a clerkship for Judge William Daniel in Fulton County Superior Court. In 1984, she joined the DeKalb County Attorney’s Office and became the first African American attorney to serve as in-house counsel for DeKalb County. Prior to forming her own firm, McIntosh-Hopewell & Associates, Ms. Hopewell was associated with the law firm of Arrington & Hollowell, a firm founded by Civil Rights Attorney Donald Lee Hollowell and longtime Atlanta City Council President, Marvin Arrington.
In addition to practicing law, Ms. Hopewell served as part-time member of the DeKalb County Bench from 1988 to 2005, sitting as a judge in the Magistrate Court, Juvenile Court and Recorder’s Court. She also sat by special designation in Superior Court during her tenure as a magistrate. Ms. Hopewell is a member of the DeKalb County Merit System Council hearing appeals from the DeKalb County Merit System. She is a graduate of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy and has been a certified mediator since 1992.
Ms. Hopewell has a long history of public service and community involvement. She a co-founder and past president of the DeKalb Lawyers Association. Ms. Hopewell is on the Board of Directors of the DeKalb Lawyers Community and Education Fund and a member of the State Bar of Georgia’s BASICS Committee. Ms. Hopewell has also served as past president of the Board of Directors of the DeKalb Council for the Arts and past president of ARThink DeKalb. She was also a member of the DeKalb Creative Industries Task Force and the Board of Directors of WRFG Radio. Ms. Hopewell also served as Vice Chair of the DeKalb Peachtree Airport Advisory Board and was a member of the DeKalb County Cable TV Advisory Board and DeKalb Judicial Facilities Authority. Ms. Hopewell is a Life Member of the NAACP. She previously served as legal advisor for the DeKalb Branch and received the Thurgood Marshall Award and President’s Award from the organization.
Ms. Hopewell received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame and a law degree from the Catholic University.
